Zagreb to the Sea Adventure

Biking, Sea Kayaking, and Hiking in Croatia

This multisport adventure holiday combines the best of urban and rural Croatia. The journey begins in Zagreb, Croatia’s lively capital city, where you will stroll through the charming streets and hike up Mount Medvednica.

Next, we visit world-famous Plitvice Lakes National Park, which dazzles visitors with its exquisite series of 16 emerald green and opal blue travertine lakes.

We then head to Istria for the remainder of the trip. For the next two days, you will have the chance to tour inland Istria by bike and enjoy incredible views of medieval hilltop towns, olive groves, vineyards, and forests spread across the region’s rolling green hills.

You’ll then get to enjoy two days of sea kayaking next to the stunning coastline, rocky coves and islands around Porec and Rovinj, small coastal towns filled with magnificent historical sites.

The 8-day tour concludes in Porec, which is not far from the harbors and airports of Pula, Rijeka, Venice, and Trieste.

This trip is also possible as a shortened 5-day tour.

DAY 1
Arrival in Zagreb

Our journey begins in Zagreb, Croatia’s vibrant capital city. Groups typically meet in the afternoon or evening, so please keep this in mind when booking your flights. Many guests choose to arrive a day or two early to adjust to the local time and explore Zagreb’s charming streets, lively cafes and numerous parks. Before sunset we will meet for a welcome drink, dinner and brief orientation where we will have a chance to discuss the upcoming holiday and get to know our guides and fellow travelers.

Accommodation: Zagreb; Meals: Dinner.

DAY 2
Hiking Mount Medvednica

Rising high above Zagreb is Mount Medvednica, a popular natural area for locals seeking a respite from the city. The hiking trail will take us through thick beech and pine forests, with several stops that offer a beautiful view of Zagreb spreading into the valley below. When we reach the summit of Sljeme, located at 1033 meters above sea level, we will be rewarded with a stunning view of the rolling green hills in Croatia’s Zagorje region and the Alps in the distance. On a clear day you can see three different countries: Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. You may bring snacks for a picnic lunch or purchase something from one of the mountain lodges at the summit.

After the hike we have a two-hour drive to our accommodation near Plitvice Lakes National Park. You will have time to settle into your room, relax and explore the area before dinner.

Accommodation: Plitvice Lakes NP guesthouse; Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 3
Walking Tour of Plitvice Lakes National Park

Today we are visiting one the most beautiful and stunning national parks in Croatia – Plitvice Lakes National Park. Visiting Plitvice is possible only by hiking around the park’s 16 lakes, seemingly endless forests and numerous waterfalls fed by both the Black and White Rivers. We start our trip walking along the park’s wooden paths and bridges. Plitvice’s exquisite series of emerald green and opal blue travertine lakes, more than 90 waterfalls and numerous caves make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lakes are surrounded by beech and pine forests and are home to extensive wildlife. There is an option to enjoy a picnic lunch in this pristine, natural area. A panoramic boat and bus ride will take us back to the starting point.

After visiting the park we will head to Istria, where we will stay for the remainder of the trip. We have a three-hour drive to our accommodation in the picturesque hillside town of Motovun. We will arrive in time to enjoy a dinner of truffles – a local specialty – and see a stunning sunset over the Mirna River Valley.

Accommodation: Motovun; Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 4
Oprtalj - Groznjan - Motovun Cycling Tour

The Istrian Peninsula is well known for its coast, but some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes lie inland. Rural Istria is rich with medieval hilltop villages, vineyards, fields and forests, which are perfect for exploring by bike. Today’s cycling tour includes Oprtalj and Groznjan, charming hillside towns where we will have time for a short walk and exploring. We will also get the chance to cycle the Parenzana, an old railroad bed now known as a mecca for cyclists. As we slowly travel down to the Mirna River Valley, we will enjoy magnificent views of the countryside.

After the cycling trip you will have time to explore Motovun, walk along its old defense walls or relax before dinner.

Accommodation: Motovun; Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 5
Optional Trip Day – Istrian Wine Safari / Hiking Ucka Mountain / Istrian Villages Sightseeing / Relaxing in Motovun

Today there is an option to take a rest day or go on a day trip that your guide will help you organize. Possible options include:

Wine Safari: Explore the best Istrian wineries and taste fine local wines and traditional Istrian gourmet cuisine. Spend a day driving through the region’s breathtaking hills and valleys, enjoy the view and let all your senses take in the best of Istria.

Hiking Ucka Mountain: Ucka is the highest mountain on the Istrian peninsula. Its highest peak, Vojak, offers a stunning panoramic view of Croatia’s northern coast and islands, the mountains of Gorski Kotar, the Italian Alps and Dolomites and the whole Istrian Peninsula. Ucka Nature Park is where the Mediterranean and continental climates meet, resulting in a unique spectrum of flora and fauna. This is the only place on Earth where you can see the endemic Ucka bellflower.

Istrian Villages Sightseeing: Take a guided tour of the towns of Motovun and Groznjan in the heart of Istria and follow the Mirna River all the way to the Adriatic Sea.

For those who have decided to do the 5-day version of the tour, today marks the end of the trip. Our guides will help you plan the rest of your holiday and recommend places to visit throughout Croatia – don’t hesitate to ask them for any suggestions.

Accommodation: Motovun; Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 6
Sea Kayaking Rovinj Islands

The picturesque town of Rovinj is a masterpiece of urban art and architecture, but its surroundings, the Rovinj Archipelago Islands, are masterpieces of nature. The best way to explore and enjoy them is in a kayak. Our kayaks will take you to the harbor, around Old Town Rovinj, to the Golden Cape and to Sveta Katarina (Saint Catherine) Island and its hidden beaches – all in a half-day round trip. One of our secret spots includes optional cliff jumping into the crystal clear sea for more adventurous travelers. After kayaking, there will be time to enjoy a walk through the meandering, narrow streets of Rovinj and enjoy a coffee, an ice cream or a glass of wine before heading to Porec for the next two nights.

Accommodation: Porec guesthouse; Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 7
Sea Kayaking Porec Islands

Porec is one of Istria’s most renowned tourist destinations. The ancient town manages to balance the authentic charm of a small coastal town filled with magnificent historical sites, with the perks and exciting features modern and active travelers expect. Spread across 37 km of stunning coastline, the Porec Riviera is ideal for sea kayaking. Today’s trip will provide you with a unique view of Porec Old Town and give you the chance to explore the area from a different perspective.

Accommodation: Porec; Meals: Breakfast, Dinner.

DAY 8

Today our tour comes to an end. You are welcome to schedule your homeward transport for any time, but we suggest avoiding booking departures early in the morning and recommend arranging ground transportation from areas that are close to Porec.  When booking your return flights, please keep in mind that Porec is around a 3-hour drive from Zagreb. If you decide to spend more time in Croatia, our guides will be happy to recommend other beautiful places to visit – especially those you won’t find in tourist guidebooks.
